Best AI Content Detector for 2024 (Updated)
In this post, we will compare four different services that claim to detect AI-generated content. Specifically, we're going to find out the answer to "What is the best AI detector?" by comparing the results using sample paragraphs from ChatGPT, Bard, and Me.

Windows AI Detector came out as the best option in my opinion due to its accuracy, simplicity, and beautiful user interface.
Finding the best AI content detector
In today’s world, a significant amount of content is generated using LLMs like ChatGPT and Bard. This could mean that some of the text you're reading may have been created by a machine. It is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between human and AI-generated content just by reading the text in question.
As a result, you may be wondering how to identify generated content, and what is the best AI detector out there.
In this post, I will be sharing my personal recommendation based on the testing I've done using four different free to try AI detector tools. I will go through the features, test their accuracy, and conclude with the results.
AI detectors
For this post, I've chosen four popular choices that are available for free today. Each of them claims to be the best AI detector on the market. We're going to see which one is actually the best AI detector out there. We're going to compare:
AI vs. Human Content
To kick this off, we're going to create three paragraphs about kittens. The first one will be generated using ChatGPT, the second one using Bard, and the last one will be written by yours truly.
ChatGPT
There is something undeniably captivating about kittens, those enchanting little beings with their fluffy coats, tiny whiskers, and bright, inquisitive eyes that seem to hold a universe of wonder. Their infectious energy and boundless curiosity can turn even the dreariest of days into a delightful adventure, as they pounce on toys, chase imaginary foes, and explore every nook and cranny with unabashed enthusiasm. The gentle purring vibrations as they curl up in your lap, seeking warmth and affection, create a soothing symphony that melts away stress and brings a sense of tranquility. With their playful antics and adorable antics, kittens have an uncanny ability to bring out the inner child in us, reminding us of the simple joys in life and the importance of embracing moments of pure bliss.
Bard
Kittens are adorable, playful, and energetic creatures that can bring a lot of joy to a home. They are born with their eyes closed and are completely dependent on their mother for food and care for the first few weeks of their lives. After about two weeks, they begin to open their eyes and explore their surroundings. Kittens are social creatures and enjoy playing with other kittens or with their human companions. They are also very curious and love to investigate new things. If you are looking for a furry friend who will bring you years of love and laughter, a kitten is a great choice.
Human
Kittens are probably the cutest little furry creatures with their big eyes and high-pitched meows. They’ll quickly spread joy around the house and become part of the family. Kittens love to play with everyone around the house, they are very social creatures and enjoy spending time with humans. Soon after they are born, they usually need their mother for a variety of reasons, most importantly kittens cannot regulate their body temperatures so they could die from hypothermia if their mother does not keep them warm. They develop quickly, and learn a few important things from their moms as well, things like hunting, and using the litter box, among other important things.
Phew! I see why people are over-using generative AI nowadays, from writing essays to blog posts. This short paragraph took a few minutes to write compared with an almost immediate response from ChatGPT and Bard. (Or I could be a slow writer, who knows.)
Testing our AI content detector tools
We're now going to copy-paste each paragraph into our AI detection tools and look at the results to determine which one of them is the best AI detector from the bunch.
Winston AI
We can get started using Winston AI by creating a new account and activating our free trial which comes with 2,000 credits. Here are the results from Winston AI:
As you can see, the tool successfully detected that the ChatGPT and Bard paragraphs were 100% AI-generated, but thinks only 44% of the paragraph I wrote was actually written by a human and attributed the remaining 56% to AI, which is acceptable since I may have a few sentences that match AI writing.
Copyleaks - AI Detector
The folks at Copyleaks offer a free trial that expires when the 25 credits are up. Each credit is about 250 words which means you can scan up to 6250 words for free using Copyleaks - AI Detector. The nice thing here, however, is that you can scan a few samples of text without signing up, and that's exactly what I did. Here are the results:
Here we can see perfect results. Copyleaks predicted that the paragraphs generated using ChatGPT and Bard are 99.9% AI-generated, while predicting that my paragraph is 99.9% human written. Impressive.
ZeroGPT
Similar to Copyleaks, you can scan a few samples of text directly on the ZeroGPT home page without signing up. Here are the results:
ZeroGPT's results kind of surprised me since it has 'GPT' in its name and completely failed to predict the paragraph generated by ChatGPT as shown in the results. However, it successfully identified the content generated by Bard with a 100% score, and similarly to Winston somewhat failed in detecting my paragraph by predicting a ~45% score that the content was AI-generated, which is not correct.
Writer - AI Content Detector
As you can see here, with Writer's AI Content Detector we have impressive results close to Copyleaks. It did however predict 85% for the ChatGPT paragraph instead of 100% and 88% for the Bard paragraph instead of a 100% and predicted with high accuracy the paragraph written by me. These are definitely good results.
Latest Addition: GPTZero
Not ZeroGPT, but GPTZero. I am not sure if the other tools updated their platforms, but GPTZero can highlight the sentences that it detects as human or AI, which is really helpful if you're trying to dive deep into specific sentences rather than the full text.

Limitations and Pricing
All of the tools in this post are free to try. All of them require a subscription if you'd like to go beyond the trial limitations and unlock more features. We're going to take a quick look at the base price for each and the monthly limitations:

Can you fool them?
The short answer: Yes.
Sometimes, these AI content detection tools don’t work properly when sentences are altered. If you make changes and add your own style to AI-generated content, these tools won’t recognize it as AI-generated anymore. This is understandable since the content has been revised and is no longer entirely AI-generated.
So, which one is the best AI detector?
Based on our sample text and tests, Copyleaks AI Content Detector and Winston AI Detector both have great accuracy.
However, I recommend Winston AI Detector due to its easy of use, beautiful user experience and interface. Try it today!
GPTZero comes in second place as a solid option.
Writer's AI Content Detector comes in third as a reliable option but I cannot recommend it since it is limited to 1,500 characters.
In contrast, ZeroGPT ranks last on our list since it failed to detect any AI content from ChatGPT's paragraph, even though it did accurately detect Bard-generated text.
Conclusion
As mentioned earlier, it's important to note that the above paragraphs were unmodified, and nowadays individuals that use generative AI to produce content such as essays, blog posts, and articles, and more typically paraphrase and modify some of the generated sentences, thereby potentially preventing detecting by all the tools examined here.
